Here are some tips that may be helpful for the success of your Unity Candle ceremony.
1. Carved tapers (candles representing the Bride & Groom) should be lit just before the unity candle ceremony. If they have been lit over 15-20 minutes, there is a chance of dripping because of air movement within the church. If a pool of wax in the top of the taper candle builds up, there is the potential that wax will drip when lighting the unity candle. A good way to light the tapers just before the Unity Candle ceremony, is to have the Mother's of the Bride & Groom, light the taper candles. The couple could also light their own candle if the Mother's prefer not to be involved. Have a separate box of matches for both Bride & Groom available on the altar. We actually saw a Best Man light all of the candles with a Bic cigarette lighter (this was not exactly what the Bride intended.) Make sure that everyone involved in the wedding knows about the Unity Candle ceremony.
2. Consider placing a piece of satin under the Unity Candle set to catch any drips that may occur. This will protect any surfaces at the wedding site that may be harmed by wax. Any candle will drip (even dripless ones) if they are exposed to a breeze or air movement. Carved tapers will drip when they hit a carved surface. The top of the taper will be dripless until it hits the carving.
3. Make sure the Unity Candle is lit and burning steadily. You will see a tiny pool of wax appear at the base of the wick when it is well lit. Sometimes there is wax in the wick and this starts burning, creating a very nice flame, and then when the wax is used up in the wick, the candle could go out. The key is to see the tiny pool of liquid wax at the base of the wick. It could be burning steady and then drop down to a small flame and then pop back up to normal size. This is normal.
4. When the Bride & Groom are lighting the Unity Candle, it is preferable to pick up the taper with the holder and light the Unity Candle. This sometimes is not possible when you have a one piece unity candle holder.
5. Many couples choose to leave their tapers burning after lighting the Unity Candle as a symbol of their individual lives. Other couples prefer to extinguish the tapers, leaving the Unity Candle burning as a symbol of their joined life together.
6. Designate a responsible Groomsman to located a fire extinguisher in the church before the wedding. This person would also be responsible to see that the candles are extinguished after the wedding couple leaves the wedding site. We walked into a church during the reception which was taking place in the basement of the church and the candles were still burning.
